Lesson Objectives:
Define chemical bond
Explain why most atoms form chemical bonds.
Describe ionic and covalent bonds and their formation.
Classify bonding type according to electronegativity difference.
Use an electronegativity periodic table.
Describe how atoms interact with one another by transferring and sharing valence electrons.
Describe the formation of cations and anions.
Illustrate neutral atoms and ions using electron dot notation.
Illustrate ionic bonds utilizing electron dot notation.
Illustrate polyatomic ions using Lewis Structures.
Describe how atoms interact with one another by transferring and sharing valence electrons.
Define molecule and molecular formula.
Describe the formation of covalent bonds.
Explain the difference between intermolecular forces and intramolecular forces.
Explain the relationship between potential energy, formation of a molecule, bond length, and bond energy.
State the Octet Rule
Determine the Lewis Structures for molecules containing singe., double, and triple bonds.
Describe and illustrate resonance structures.
Compare and contrast ionic and covalent bonds and their properties.
Describe the “sea of electrons” model of metallic bonding
Explain why metals are good conductors of thermal energy and electricity
Explain why metals are malleable and ductile
Describe why ionic bonds are not malleable and ductile
Explain why metals are shiny
Explain the VSEPR Theory including its basis and assumption
Predict the molecular shape of molecules based on the Lewis Structure
Predict the shapes of polyatomic ions based on the Lewis Structure
Explain the effect of lone pairs of electrons on the molecular geometry of the molecule
Determine molecular geometry according to the VSEPR Theory for linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, trigonal pyramidal, and bent shapes (2)
Differentiate between intramolecular and intermolecular forces
Define dipole, and determine the direction of a dipole moment in a polar molecule
Explain what determines molecular polarity
Determine molecular polarity for a sample of nonpolar and polar molecules
Describe how electronegativity differences determine the distribution of charge in a polar molecule
Describe dipole-dipole forces, London dispersion forces, and hydrogen bonding and their effect on properties such as boiling point.
Identify intermolecular forces between molecules as dipole-dipole, London dispersion forces, or hydrogen bonding.
Prior Knowledge:
Familiar with electron configuration, ions formation, and the periodic table
