Everything you need for a successful Atomic Structure Unit! Five complete lessons: each lesson includes student notes, detailed teacher notes, check for understanding exit tickets, and homework. Also, included in this Mega Unit Bundle are four quizzes, two sets of task cards, color-by-number, four doodle notes, 2 graphic organizers, a quick lab, one board game, one math maze, a domino puzzle, and a bonus lesson. And finally, an editable unit study guide and editable unit test are included!
Note about the Mole Lesson: I introduce the mole at the end of the atomic structure unit—counting atoms, and it is included in this unit. This time of the year usually falls not long after working with dimensional analysis making it fresh on their minds. By putting this first mole lesson here, it reinforces dimensional analysis, and brings the mole in to play early in the year. I usually stick in another mole lesson after nomenclature, and before reactions, for more reinforcement before stoichiometry. If you don’t teach the mole at this time, you can just save the lesson for later!
The Atomic Structure Mega Unit Bundle includes these concepts:
♦ Relate the mass, charge, and location of the three primary subatomic particles.
♦ Identify the atomic number, mass number, number of protons, neutrons, and electrons for elements using information on the periodic table.
♦ Represent a neutral atom using hyphen notation and the nuclear symbol.
♦ Determine if an ion is a cation or an anion.
♦ Calculate the number of electrons in an ion using information on the periodic table and the element’s nuclear symbol.
♦ Define isotope and understand that most elements have more than one isotope.
♦ Explain that atoms of the same element have the same number of protons, but can have a different number of neutrons.
♦ Calculate the number of neutrons in an isotope given the mass number for the atom or ion.
♦ Explain weighted average.
♦ Discuss how percentage and mass of isotopes can be determined through spectrometry.
♦ Calculate the average atomic mass of sample elements.
♦ Explain the Law of Conservation of Mass, the Law of Definite Proportions, and the Law of Multiple Proportions.
♦ Summarize the five point of Dalton’s Atomic Theory.
♦ Summarize the observations of J.J. Thomson’s cathode ray experiment.
♦ Summarize Rutherford’s gold foil experiment, and draw conclusions from the experiment.
♦ Discuss the dual-wave particle nature of electrons.
♦ Discuss the Bohr Model advancements, and problems.
♦ Identify the five basic models of the atom and placement in the atomic timeline.
♦ Discuss the current Quantum Mechanical Model of the atom.
♦ Define mole in terms of Avogadro’s Number.
♦ Use the periodic table to determine molar masses of pure substances.
♦ Perform calculations involving mass in grams, amount in moles, number of atoms in a pure substance, and molar volume.
♦ Know the 30 most common elements names and element symbols.
