Updated: Now includes print and digital options for the lesson. Perfect for distance learning or the paperless classroom. Interactive student notes, exit ticket, and homework for Google Slides™.

Complete lesson for Atomic Structure: Particles of the Atom. Lesson includes subatomic particles, size of the atom, counting subatomic particles, writing hyphen notation and the nuclear symbol, and reading the periodic table element square. This lesson does not include ions or isotopes. For that, see Atomic Structure: Ions & Isotopes.

In this lesson students are introduced to the atom and its subatomic particles. (Quarks and Leptons are included just as a FYI) By the end of the lesson students will be able to:
Identify the subatomic particles of the atom and describe in terms of charge, mass, and location
Using the mass number and atomic number, determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons
Represent the atom in both hyphen notation and using the nuclear symbol
Use the element’s periodic square to gain information needed to calculate the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons
* NOTE: Ions and Isotopes are not included in this lesson—they will be in the next lesson.
