This is an introduction to chemical reactions lesson. In the lesson, students will define vocabulary associated with chemical reactions. Then, we will discuss signs that a chemical reaction has taken place. Students will be able to state that a chemical reaction supports the Law of Conservation of Mass. Before we move to chemical equations, students will practice using coefficients with subscripts. (counting atoms)
The teacher notes included several teacher demos that can be used throughout the unit.
Lesson Objectives:
-
Identify what defines a chemical reaction.
-
Identify indications that a chemical reaction has occurred.
-
Define precipitate.
-
Relate the Law of Conservation of Mass to the balanced equation.
-
Identify the parts of a balanced chemical equation: reactants and products.
-
Differentiate between a subscript and a coefficient, and use both to calculate the number of atoms present.
Prior Knowledge:
Students should be very familiar with writing chemical formulas – ionic, molecular, & acids
Teacher Prep Time:
Just print and go! Depending on the teacher demos that you choose, there may be some very minor set up for these demos.
Lesson Duration:
One class period
