This homework page is included in the lesson: Phase Changes, Phase Diagrams, & Heating/Cooling Curves. These homework pages can be used for homework or class practice.

Two versions of this homework:

Honors version: (2 pages) Honors students will answer more complex questions, and calculate heat of fusion and heat of vaporization.

Standard version: (1 page) The standard version does not include heat of fusion or heat of vaporization problems. The questions are a less complex.

A complete KEY is included.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the role of vapor pressure in changes of state between a liquid and its gas.
  • Explain forces of attraction and energy changes involved in change of state.
  • Describe the relationship between energy and change of state in terms of endothermic or exothermic processes.
  • Identify the six changes of state, and the energy involvement associated with each change.
  • Calculate the amount of energy absorbed or released in order for a change of state to occur. (Hvap, Hfus)

Prior Knowledge:

  • Understand the concepts of phases of matter and how they relate to energy
  • A good understanding of phase changes related to energy changes, changes in attractive forces, and particle movement and arrangement

This homework is appropriate for grades 9-12 chemistry, or physical science.
