This is a great lab to use at the beginning of your chemical reactions unit. Students will perform six reactions and identify the evidence of a chemical change for each reaction.

In the evidence of a chemical change lab students will perform reactions that will-
Test the Law of Conservation of Mass
Endothermic/Exothermic reactions
Formation of a precipitate reaction
Reactant replaced by the product, (single replacement reaction)
Change in temperature (energy)

***THIS LAB IS INCLUDED IN THE FOLLOWING BUNDLE:***

Objectives:
Observe reactions and state evidence that a chemical reaction has occurred
Based on observations, make inferences about the products and the reaction.

Prior Knowledge for Students:
Students need to be able to write chemical formulas from chemical names prior to this lab.
Students do NOT need to know the types of reactions prior to this lab.

Teacher Prep Time: average to above average due to the preparation of the solutions for the lab, but the time is well worth it to provide this engaging lab for your students.

Included in this Lab:
~Five pages of teacher prep instruction, tips, and directions
~Step-by-step teacher directions for solution prep, lab set up, modifications for time concerns and differentiated for students on different levels
~Detailed student directions
~Student Lab Report—you can choose to have students use the lab report as their final product or use it to write up their lab report.
~Lab Quiz and a Modified Lab Quiz
~Lab Make-Up for absent students—no need to leave lab set up!
~ Keys for lab report and quiz

Materials Needed for this Lab
- aluminum foil, copper (II) chloride, 0.5M, beakers (4) 150 mL; (2) 50 mL
- copper (II) nitrate, 1.0M, ammonium chloride, test tubes (3)
- sodium hydroxide, 1.0M, calcium chloride, test tube rack
- sodium carbonate, 1.0M, electronic balance
- calcium chloride, 1.0M, thermometer
- acetic acid (vinegar), glass stirring rod, DI water

This lab is appropriate for grades 9-12 chemistry.

Lab Duration: You should be able to complete the lab in one class period-with a pre-lab session the day before. The lab can be extended to two class periods depending on how you set it up. All solutions will be fine to keep. I have discussed several different ways to conduct the lab, depending on the level of your students, in the teacher notes.

You will want to save this lab and use it for years to come!
