The focus of this lab is to reinforce learning from your States of Matter Unit. This lab may be very basic in nature, but it gives a big bang in reinforcement!

Students will gain hands on experience with the relationship between temperature, energy, and phase changes through this lab. They will conclude that energy added to the system will either increase temperature (kinetic energy), or be used to bring about a phase change in which kinetic energy is constant, and the energy is used to break down attractive forces holding molecules together (increasing potential energy). Students will also be able to clearly observe how average kinetic energy and temperature are related through their constructed graphs and the diffusion of particles through boiling water and tap water.

Objectives:
  • Observe the effects of temperature and energy while heating a substance to bring about phase changes
  • Create a heating curve for water
  • Relate temperature, energy, and phases changes
Prior Knowledge:
  • Understand the concepts of phases of matter and how they relate to energy
  • A good understanding of phase changes related to energy changes, changes in attractive forces, and particle movement and arrangement
  • Experience reading a Heating/Cooling Curve
Materials Needed for this Lab: basic lab equipment, and no difficult solutions to prepare

Lesson Duration: One class period
