The Types of Chemical Reactions Lab is a great way to end your chemical reactions unit. All five of the basic types of reactions are represented in this lab. Included you will find five pages of teacher notes that include detailed set-up instructions along with tips that will insure a successful lab experience for you and your students.
In the teacher notes you will find detailed instructions for solution preparation, tips and suggestions for setting up and running the lab, and three pre-lab demos that will help students prepare for the lab.
Also included is a student lab answer sheet that can be used as the lab grade or as student notes for writing the lab report. There is also a lab quiz and a make-up assignment for absent students.
Students will perform the reactions, write the word equation, write and balance the chemical formula equation, and identify the type of reaction. Students will be asked to use the Activity Series of Elements, and a Solubility Chart (both included) for determining products.
I do this lab in two class periods with about half a period pre-lab instruction the day before the lab. I could be finished in a block period. To differentiate the lab for lower level classes, I have students do each reaction one at a time as a class. This helps makes monitoring the lab much easier, and keeps students on task.
