Name It & Write It—The Great Nomenclature Race! Must have activity for your nomenclature unit!
This is one of my favorite activities of the year. Students get very competitive with this race, but the best thing about this race is to listen to them working together—talking through the formulas—discussing the correct format! It also gives the students a chance to assess their own proficiency with nomenclature. I have had many students identify their weaknesses on their own, or say something like, “I thought I knew this.”
Teams compete as partners to be the first to answer forty problems. Half of the problems are formulas to name, and the other half is names to write the formulas for.
Formulas nomenclature included in this activity are:
*Ionic compounds
*Ionic compounds w/ multivalent metal ions
*Acids
*Hydrates
*Molecular Compounds
KEY is included!
