In this lesson students will relate significant figures with the digits recorded for measurements. In the preceding lesson, students learned the correct way to record a measurement by recording the numbers that are certain and estimating one more digit. Here, we name those recorded digits significant figures. I have found by teaching sig figs in this way, students will more readily accept sig figs, understand the importance of sig figs, and be ready to use them for the rest of the year.

Lesson Objectives:

Define significant figures
Determine the number of significant figures in measurements

Precision, and measurement skills showing precision
