Updated: Now includes print and digital options for the lesson. Perfect for distance learning or the paperless classroom. Interactive student notes, exit ticket, and homework for Google Slides™.
This is one of the most important lessons of the year. The concepts included in this lesson are the basis for so much of the work done throughout the year. This lesson is based on a rather unique approach to teaching the metric system that leads beautifully into dimensional analysis! I’ve been using this teaching technique for years with much success. After the 34 slides lesson, teacher demos, and class activities, your students will be well on their way to being dimensional analysis and metric system masters! The lesson ends with a crazy fun class activity.
Lesson Objectives:
* Compare the British Imperial Measurement System with the Metric System (SI)
* Identify the basic prefixes of the metric system
* Perform metric conversions
* Identify and use metric prefixes outside of the basic prefixes such as micro and nano
* Define dimensional analysis
* Set up conversion factors
* Convert units of measure using dimensional analysis
* Convert derived units such as miles/hour and m/s

Crosscutting Concepts 3: Scale, Proportion, and Quantity
Science & Engineering Practices 5: Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking

Note on the PowerPoints: The PowerPoints included in this product are editable. They are also animated, which means that they may appear busy or overlapping in the slide edit mode, but will be awesome in the slide show mode! Please don’t edit the PowerPoints until you have seen them in the slide show mode!
This lesson is appropriate for grades 9-12 chemistry & physical science
