Get a strong start for your Electron Configuration studies with this first basic lesson!

This is the first lesson on electron configuration. In this lesson students become familiar with the idea that each principle energy level has sublevels. And these sublevels have different numbers of orbitals, and orbitals have different shapes. The three rules governing electron configuration is introduced, and students end the lesson by writing orbital notation for select elements.

Lesson Objectives:
Relate the number of sublevels for each of an atom’s principle energy levels
Relate the number of orbitals per sublevel, and the shapes of sublevel orbitals
Calculate the number of electrons possible per sublevel
Identify the three rules that govern electron configuration, and discuss each rule as related to electron placement
Write the orbital notation for select elements at ground state.
