This lesson is an introductory lesson to the periodic table. The lesson begins with some of the history of the periodic table. Then, we look at some of the basics of the table that students should know on their journey to being proficient at “reading” the periodic table.
Periods, groups, valence electrons, sublevel blocks, and relating electron configuration to the periodic table is included.

Print & Digital versions of the lesson are included! Perfect for distance learning or the paperless classroom!

Lesson Objectives:
Students will identify the contributions made to the development of the periodic table by Mendeleev and Moseley
Identify key features of the periodic table such as periods, groups/families
Identify the number of valence electrons for elements based on main group family number
Discuss why elements within the same group have similar physical and chemical properties
Relate periodicity to electron configuration

Prior Knowledge:
Familiar with writing electron configuration

Lesson Duration: 1 class period
